Phyllis Reid, MSW, CPP is a Clinical Social Worker who works as a Psychotherapist with adults, children and families in various inner city schools and communities in Miami for over a decade. Powerful Positive Message

As I prepared myself to read this book, I was under the assumption that it was "just a children's book", but as I began reading, I realized that this book was backed by a powerful message that would speak volumes about the author and it would relate to people of all walks of life. A message about a group of friends "brothers and sisters", that share their world, and their view of how its all relative, while enjoying a day out at the park, you learn that these children are full of faith and love, and have come to share their strong moral values by empowering another group who could benefit from their beliefs and positivity. The book brings everything of the world together and puts unity into focus. One Diverse Universe is an amazing read, with beautiful, colorful and vivid images and graphics, that appeal to the senses and imagination. The Puzzle that isn't complete without each individual unique piece, we come together, problem solving, analytic thinking, imagination, inspiration, beauty and faith, this book has a wide combination of positive aspects that anyone reading it can walk away feeling at peace.
Moral of the story: "Accept, respect, spread peace and love..." and "the answer is one, oneness; we are all one, one God, one universe, one world, one family of man." Very enjoyable read.

This book has an amazing outlook on bringing everyone together. With small children teaching the lesson, This is a great way for children to connect with them and see the world as they do. For me and my children this helps bring it to life.
This book also is a great jumping off board to talk to your children about the world being one place and we are all connected. My children learned so much as did I about the greater good and understanding of Gods plan for us to live in harmony as a One.

I recommend this book to all parents of school aged kids. It will help them understand that we are one in this big world and should take care of each other.

The main selling point of any short story collection is, arguably, this: if you don’t like one story, you can simply skip ahead to the next one. Most best-selling authors with name-brand recognition have published at least one volume of short stories. A well-regarded humorist like David Sedaris is blessed with a trademark wit that can turn almost any subject matter into absurdist gold. But the art of crafting short stories effectively is not necessarily a skill inherent to even the most talented novelists. Perrotta is a successful author, with memorable hits like Election (1998) and Little Children (2004), both of which were turned into acclaimed Hollywood films. The Balladeer of Suburbia Strikes Gold in Nine Incredible Vistas

Tom Perrotta has delivered his first set of short stories since his first book, BAD HAIRCUT, back in the mid-90s. Perrotta, well-known for such great novels as THE LEFTOVERS, ELECTION and LITTLE CHILDREN, has crafted nine perfect stories that encapsulate his unique voice as the balladeer for life in the suburbs. NINE INCHES features nine stories about the lost, the lonely and the outsider, all navigating the stretch of America between the Best Buy and the Olive Garden. The title story refers to the length of measurement the chaperones have to use at the middle school dance to make sure couples aren't too close. In GRADE MY TEACHER a middle-age teacher becomes obsessed with negative feedback on a popular student site. SENIOR SEASON is the last year of high school for Clay, whose injury the year before leaves him off the football team and trying aimlessly to make a place for himself. THE ALL-NIGHT PARTY is told from the POV of a chaperone at the senior's post-graduation school-sanctioned party. All of Perrotta's characters are treated with respect no matter their questioning of life or their reasons for existing. The ennui of suburban living has never been more potent than from the pen of Perrotta, whom, along with Stewart O'Nan, are our modern-day Updikes and Yates.

SHORT STORIES THAT WILL CONSUME YOU

NINE INCHES

The best thing about author Tom Perrotta is his ability to dive directly into his characters hearts, souls, minds, and emotions. He makes his characters NOT perfect; they are extremely human and therefore full of little flaws and the imperfections that make all of us human.

This is my first book of short stories by Perrotta; I have read and enjoyed LITTLE CHILDREN and THE WISHBONES. This book certainly did not disappoint. There are ten stories and each and every one of them were practically perfectly written, holding my interest, surprising and shocking me, and sometimes making me laugh out loud or turn to tears. Perrotta has the human factor down pat.

A few of my favorites from this sweeping little book are:

BACKRUB -- A pizza delivery boy has a strange relationship with a police officer. Our delivery guy is taking a 'break' between high school and college and decides that delivering pizza would be a great way to make some cash and pass the time. However, things are not what they seem and there is much more substance to this story than a hot and cheesy pizza being delivered. Why isn't he going to college when he should be? Is there really money to be made in the pizza delivery business? What is up with the police officer? Read this shocking little yarn and find out!

THE TEST-TAKER -- Is another winner regarding a high school student who is paid big bucks to take SAT testing for other students. It is a booming business and one this guy excels at. He has a boss who picks his clients carefully and who supplies all the fake IDs required. One day, however, Josh, our test-taker, looses control and the results are unbelievable.

Perrotta writes about families, women, men, teens, divorce, misgivings, missed chances, the future hopes and dreams we all share. Most of these characters have a secret or two they may or may not share. The stories are all written so well and are full of tense situations, thrilling consequences, and vivid details. You will feel as if you are personal friends with each and every character, they are so humanized and down to earth.

In case you are wondering, NINE INCHES is the title of one story and refers to a dance rule at a high school -- students had to keep their bodies at least that far apart while dancing -- nine inches. The chaperones at the dance are outfitted with nine inch measuring tapes and enforce that rule to the fullest.

If you are a fan of Tom Perrotta or new to his world, check out NINE INCHES. It will not disappoint! It comes highly recommended!

School Daze and Other Sorrows

First, rest assured: this is by no means the crude book that the cover photograph would indicate. That particular meaning of the title is barely touched upon in passing, a mildly risqué remark from one chaperone at a school dance to another. Tom Perrotta is not averse to tackling edgy subjects -- sex education in THE ABSTINENCE TEACHER, right-wing Christianity in THE LEFTOVERS -- but his particular talent is to use them for sensitive studies of ordinary human beings making their best of sadly ordinary lives. The New York Times compared him to Chekhov; Time called him "The Steinbeck of Suburbia"; both are correct.

I am a little surprised not to read that Perrotta had a career as a high-school teacher in his earlier life. It is a world he knows well, as his 1998 novel ELECTION (and the movie made from it) brilliantly demonstrated. Over half the ten stories in this collection have a school setting or involve school-age children. There is at least one classroom scene, a couple of school dances, several more parties, and two stories with a sports setting. One of these, "The Smile on Happy Chang's Face," was selected for the Boston "One City, One Story" project in 2010. Told from the perspective of a divorced dad serving as home plate umpire, this is a Little League championship game that seems to be more about the rivalries of the parents than anything involving the children themselves. Painfully real, it offers a touching combination of deep sadness and muted achievement.

The other story which revolves around sports is "Senior Season." The narrator is a high-school footballer, a varsity star in his junior year, now benched from his senior season as the result of a head injury. But the title has two meanings; it also refers to the old woman in the house next door who spends her days painstakingly picking fallen leaves from her lawn. The double perspective of two individuals on the sidelines of their respective lives yields some remarkable insights, before weaving its two strands together in a simply beautiful ending.

I could have picked out almost any of the other stories for praise. All the same, I was beginning to feel that the world of suburban schools and separated parents was becoming too limited. When I closed the book last night with one story still to read, I had settled on a four-star rating. Now I am back up to five. What happened? Did the final story, "All-Night Party," break triumphantly into new territory? Far from it. It is another story of a divorced parent (here called Liz), and a school party that she chaperones. If you can even call it a story at all, without a single through-line or any conclusion that will last much beyond mid-morning of the next day. But, in its ordinariness, it nonetheless encompasses an extraordinary range. It is simply a series of encounters between Liz and various other parents, a cop with whom she had a run-in some years before, a handsome senior mistreating his girl, and her own thoughts about the burgeoning sexuality of her own daughter, Dana. Not only does this one story sum up the themes of all the nine that have gone before it, but it speaks volumes about the hopes, fears, and crippling uncertainties of young people on the threshold of life -- and we older folk who don't make that much better a job of it.
