Economic Analysis of Institutions and Systems (International Studies in Economics and Econometrics), by S. Pejovich

In the late 1980s, the field of comparative economics and NATO faced a similar problem: the threat of obsolescence. A predictable reaction of those who had made major investments in both comparative economics and NATO was to look for a new job. It was time to say: comparative economic systems are dead, long live comparative economic systems. The purpose of this book is to redirect study of what we called comparative economic systems toward analysis of the development of institutions and the effects of alternative institutional arrangements on economic performance. To that end, the book internalizes into a theoretical framework (1) the effects of alternative property rights on the costs of transactions and incentives structures, (2) the effects of the costs of transactions and incentives on economic behavior, and (3) the evidence for refutable implications of those effects. Analysis here focuses on the issues, propositions and conclusions that lend themselves to the only known scientific test: empirical verification. Thus, this book is not about what socialism or capitalism could have been, should have been, or should be. Nor is it an ode to capitalism. Its purpose is not to assert that capitalism is a better economic system than socialism. The history of this century and the market for institutions have done that. My purpose is to explain what is it that makes the institutions of capitalism better in terms of economic outcome than all other alternatives that have been tried since the beginning of recorded history.

`... this book makes a great contribution to understanding and comparing economic systems. It is an important basis for building a new approach to the comparison of different economic systems and my hope is that it will contribute to the development of the analytical debate among comparativistsend.'

Powerful Case for Why Property Rights and Incentives Matter
By A Customer
Pejovich's book deals primarily with the consequences of institutional arrangements, and the book's strength lies not in an exhaustive survey of recent work but in a vivid, compelling, accessible, and often outstanding analysis of the role of incentives and transaction costs in economic life. The book provides intelligent people everywhere with a clear and reader-friendly introduction to the nature of economic systems.

In an effort to establish the link between institutions and wealth, the author examines how alternative institutional arrangements affect the costs of transactions and incentive structures and how costs of transactions and incentives influence economic behavior and economic outcomes.

My first impression was that the book was of mixed quality, including both brilliant and rather sloppy sections, and the underlying research at times appeared to be thin. Occasionally, I did not appreciate the book's spirit of advocacy, even as a strategy for winning converts. The pros, however, overwhelm the cons.

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF INSTITUTIONS AND SYSTEMS is a powerful essay that examines the consequences of incentives and property rights for economic activity. Pejovich has made a valuable contribution to redefining the field of economic systems by an intelligent discussion of the damaging effects on human society of perverse property rights and disincentives. Although the volume sometimes pastes over problems and weaknesses in systems based on private ownership, its emphasis on the relative merits of a decentralized market system based on private property fully justifies its existence.

The Organism, by Kurt Goldstein

foreword by Oliver Sacks Kurt Goldstein (1878-1965) was already an established neuropsychologist when he emigrated from Germany to the United States in the 1930s. This book, his magnum opus and widely regarded as a modern classic in psychology and biology, grew out of his dissatisfaction with traditional natural science techniques for analyzing living beings. It offers a broad introduction to the sources and ranges of application of the "holistic" or "organismic" research program that has since become a standard part of biological thought.Goldstein was especially concerned with the breakdown of organization and the failure of central controls that take place in catastrophic responses to situations such as physical or mental illness. But he was equally attuned to the amazing powers of the organism to readjust to such catastrophic losses, if only by withdrawal to a more limited range that it could manage by a redistribution of its reduced energies, thus reclaiming as much wholeness as new circumstances allowed.Goldstein's theses in The Organism have had an important impact on philosophical and psychological thought throughout the twentieth century, as evidenced in the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Georges Canguilhem, Ernst Cassirer, and Ludwig Binswanger.

From Publishers Weekly
In this age of computer-based, reductionist models of the human mind, Goldstein's (1878-1965) pioneering statement on holistic health, written in 1934 in Holland, where he emigrated to escape Nazi Germany, is welcome, especially since the U.S. edition has been out of print for decades. An influential German neurologist and psychologist who taught and practiced medicine in the U.S., where he settled the following year, Goldstein stresses the seamless activity of the whole organism, arguing that there is no independent realm of "body" or "mind." Disease, in his system, is an expression of the disturbed relationship between an organism and its environment; recovery is a newly achieved adaptation, not merely a return to a previous equilibrium. Using illustrative material ranging from brain-damaged soldiers to repression of childhood memories, this dense, philosophically informed study reevaluates such concepts as anxiety, dread, instinct, drives, the unconscious and the nature of physical and mental illness.

An essential read for any practising scientist.
By Frank Bierbrauer
Kurt Goldstein was a highly experienced and respected neurologist in the earlier years of the twentieth century who after a lifetime of experince with patients of all walks of life, but especially brain damaged soldiers of World War I, came to the conclusion that the working of the human body is far more than just independently functioning mechanisms which make a kind of slapdash whole from the sum of these "parts".
Goldstein explores many kinds of brain disorders he met along the way involving damage to the cortex and other parts of the brain often associated with structures which control certain aspects of behaviour such as reflex actions. Goldstein analyses in great detail and without prejudice each particular case describing the standard approaches on the subject and what he actually observes directly rather than just using the theory to define what is happening. Through this method he is able to obtain a far richer description of the neurological aspects of man than is usually given. He does not speculate arbitrarily but rather convinces by objective analysis. This is a hardnosed scientific approach although he still gives himself time to consider the wholeness of the body and its repair and "coming to terms" with its situation. In the last chapters he discusses approaches to the wholeness of the body and how important and relevant they are to a truer experience of the world as such. He nonetheless maintains a strong contact throughout with real patients never once releasing his touch to reality.
An essential read for any practising scientist who wants to understand.

Kurt Goldstein, Father of the Organismic View of Human Nature and Biology
By Jack H Schwartz
Kurt Goldstein, perhaps the greatest clinical neurologist of his day, was the author of many books. Chief among these are his magnum opus: 'The Organism: A Holistic Approach to Biology Derived fro Pathological Data in Man' (1939 republished in 1963 with a Forward by the great neuropsychologist Karl S. Lashley), 'The After Effects of Brain Injury in War' with a forward by the great neurologist Derek Denny-Brown, M.D. (1942), 'Human Nature In the Light of Psychopathology' (1940, republished in 1963 with a new Forward by Goldstein) and 'Language and Language Disturbances: Aphasic Symptoms Complexes and their Significance for Medicine and Theory of Language' (1948). To fully appreciate the impact of Kurt Goldstein on the biology and especially the neurology, neuropathology and neurophysiology of his day, it is well worthwhile reading Karl Lashley's Forward to Goldstein's 'The Organism' published in its 1963 republication. Here is the second half of that Forward:

"Dr. Goldstein considers the problem of neural and behavioral organization from a broadly biological point of view. On such questions he is qualified to speak as one of the world's greatest authorities. His long series of studies of patients with brain injuries, less familiar than they should be to American readers, have set a new standard of careful clinical analysis combined with keen psychological insight. His investigations of visual disorders and of aphasia revealed fundamental disturbances of thought and personality of which the recognized symptoms are only superficial expression. The analysis of such basic derangements led him deeply into the problems of the structure of mind and has resulted in a better understanding of the dynamics of normal speech and thought. From these studies has grown the conception of behavior as a result of a unified activity of the organism, which is the theme of the present volume. The data presented go far toward a solution of the apparent contradictions between the facts of elementary nervous activity and those derived from the study of cerebral function by showing that functions of parts are dependent in large measure upon the total setting in which they occur. The author's interpretation avoids many of the difficulties of both reflexology and vitalism and provides an alternative view for those whose scientific aims are satisfied neither by extreme oversimplification of fact nor by postulation of forces which cannot be investigated. The work is of prime importance for all branches of natural science which are concerned with the correlation and integration of vital functions. " - K. S. Lashley, Harvard University

In the mid-1960's there was a revived interest in the work of Kurt Goldstein, whose work had greatly impacted not only neurology but the entire field of biology and the philosophy of science as well. Five years after the republication of Goldstein's 'The Organism', Marjorie Grene, wrote an excellent analysis of Goldstein’s work as the 5th and final chapter of her book, ‘Approaches to a Philosophical Biology’ (Basic Books, Inc, New York, 1968). Professor Grene was a philosopher one of whose specializations was in the philosophy of science, especially the philosophy of biology.

Critical source for holistic biology and psychology
By Amazon Customer
Sheer genius. Goldstein is highly referenced by some of the classic thinkers in psychology and physiology. Here is where you find the original reference to 'self actualization' and this is where Maslow encountered it. This is classic systems thinking on many levels. It applies to the physical body as well as how the body functions mentally. If you are working in Mind-Body medicine, psychology or even yoga therapy, this is the place to start from a pioneer in the field. Standard reference on holistic biology, beautifully done re-issue.

Interest in India has never been greater. Here Shashi Tharoor, one of the subcontinent’s most respected writers and diplomats, offers precious insights into this complex, multifaceted land, which despite its dazzling diversity of languages, customs, and cultures remains—more than sixty years after its founding—the world’s largest democracy. He describes the vast changes that have transformed this once sleeping giant into a world leader in science and technology, a nation once poverty-stricken that now boasts a middle class of over 300 million people—as large as the entire population of the United States. Artfully combining hard facts and statistics with opinion and observation, Tharoor discusses the strengths and weaknesses of his rapidly evolving homeland in five areas—politics, economics, culture, society, and sports—and takes a fresh look at the world’s oldest civilizations and most populous countries.

From Publishers Weekly
Bewildering diversity is the very essence of India, observes novelist and columnist Tharoor (The Great Indian Novel) in this engaging collection of essays, which tries to reconcile the country's clashing traditions with progress and liberalism. Hinduism's promiscuous openness to other beliefs and cultures makes it a model of secular tolerance, he argues, though Hindu fundamentalist bigotry is his favorite target. Tharoor also insists that ancient Indian science anticipated quantum mechanics, and praises his home state of Kerala for raising female literacy rates. (In a rare nostalgic note, he mourns the demise of the sari, then fences with a backlash of critical e-mail responses from pants-wearing women.) Most of all, he celebrates India's compatibility with the global economy, a stance that occasionally shades into business boosterism. Many pieces are drawn from Tharoor's columns and feature quick, sketchy takes on Indian cultural touchstones, from political corruption to Bollywood to cricket; his themes tend to be repeated rather than developed. But Tharoor's ready wit-an Indian without a horoscope is like an American without a credit card-and sympathetic insight combine in a fascinating portrait of Indian society. (Oct.)

I wanted to know a bit more about Indian culture and Indian history and I love this book. It's so well written. You must have some basic knolwedge of Indian history to understand it though. If you don't know who Nehru was and what the "partition" was you need to read some books before this one.
The book helped me to discover many facets of the Indian culture and society: the importance of secularism (and the current threats), the basic tenets of hinduism, the difference between north and south, the passion for cricket, the odd habit of changing cities' names, the use of the sari (or the lack of use), etc.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in knowing more about India.

Must read for NRIs
By Amazon Customer
This book is a must read for Non Resident Indians. Mr. Tharoor has perfectly portrayed India in a way NRIs would manifest their experiences of their home country. Though the book is not targeted only for Indians, it has few historical & personal references that only a true Indian can understand.

The book starts with little bit of Indian history talking about "People who made my India" that includes noted Indians from all sects including politics, cricket & bollywood. The author also provides a glimpse of India's culture (spirituality, traditional family values) & tourism (experiences at Ajanta & Ellora caves, Ayurvedic resort in Kerala) followed by India's progress in this 21st century (call centers, cellphone surge). Since Mr. Tharoor has been associated with the United Nations, the facts about India's growth, outlined in the book, truly suggest that India is the 21st century's emerging power.

I really enjoyed the chapter on India's cricket legend, Sunil Gavaskar, who was my hero too when growing up. It is nostalgic the way Mr. Tharoor has written about the "little master".

This is a must read for all Indians living outside their own home country.

Pleasant Patriotism
By Prithvi Karthikeyan
I adore Tharoor's erudite and amusing writing. This book feels like home with its loving description of all that matters - cricket, family, community, cinema, history, religion and politics - in that order. The author's pet theme is the ostensibly unwieldy yet absurdly functional pluralism fed by a range of coalition memberships - geographies, cricket solidarities and common political antipathies.

I love that Tharoor describes his India as an individual experience rather than an objective concept. Tharoor subtly endorses the thumping progressive new Indians with his metaphor of an elephant who became a tiger - suggesting provocatively that the vulgarly ostentatious 'five star culture' is more authentic than the discreet opulence of the club culture. However, his intense nostalgia quite clear in the subtext of every syllable - the longing for the old names Madras and Bombay, the self-conscious diginity of Nehruvian democracy and the portrayal of St. Stephens as a modern Nalanda of sorts!

Yet, there is nothing fatalistic or too precious about Tharoor - he denounces superstition and horsocopes and doesn't mind writing that as a man he'd like to see women in elegant saris. It's the sort of nice nationalism that warms one without being too jarring or jingoistic.

More Thanquol Please!!
By Ursula K. Raphael
In the first book, Grey Seer, Thanquol is forced to retrieve a large amount of Wormstone from another Skaven city by the Council of Thirteen. Of course, the plans went astray for a variety of reasons, and Thanquol was blamed for everything that went wrong.

Needless to say, in Temple of the Serpent, Grey Seer Thanquol is called before the Council to explain to the Lords of Decay how the Wormstone was lost in Under-Altdorf. This includes a brief recap of the first book - from Thanquol's twisted POV - so it's not necessary to have read the first book, but I highly recommend it!

"Under the madness of these persistent fractals, the equations of the Old Ones were unbalanced, broken by perverse arithmetic."

Temple of the Serpent actually begins with a prologue from the POV of an ancient creature called the slann, named Lord Talco, who studies the Great Math of the Old Ones, and views xa'cota (the rat fractals) as "corrupted algorithms." It was a bit difficult to follow, but it illustrated perfectly how different the lizard race is from the Skaven or humans.

Thanquol is forced to meet with Nightlord Sneek, leader of Clan Eshin, after his disturbing meeting with the Council. Sneek is planning to send Shiwan Stalkscent, an assassin, with Shen Tsinge, a sorcerer, to a long lost empire of Clan Pestilens. The plague clan was chased off by Sotek the Snake Daemon, who is worshipped by the lizard race. Sneek wants Thanquol to go with them to make sure the high priest of the lizards is killed. The lizard race has built the Temple of the Serpent, where the slann resides. As Sneek explains to Thanquol:

"Pestilens has tried many times to kill the snake prophet. If Eshin succeeds where the plague lords have failed, it will make them afraid."

In the midst of this plot, another member of the Clan Eshin named Chang Fang plots to avenge the death of his fellow assassin, Chang Squik - one of the reasons Thanquol failed to return with the Wormstone from Under-Altdorf. Basically, Thanquol is going to have deal with another mountain of problems just to stay alive. Since they have to cross a large ocean, they hijack a human ship called the Black Mary - I absolutely loved the way the Skaven pulled off that little trick.

Of course, there is always a human factor to any Warhammer story. In this case, the crew of the Cobra of Khemi find themselves steered by an unnatural storm to Lustria (also known as Green Hell), with the lizards and Skaven. The hired mercenary of the ship, Adawolf, sort of reminded me of Felix, but without the whining. While I found the crew to be interesting, I thought that Werner spent too many pages telling the humans' side of the story, instead of spending more time focusing on Thanquol's POV. After all, I bought the book because I am a Skaven fan, and I love how Thanquol constantly twists the actual events.

When all three groups converge on the City of Quetza, the battle scenes were superb. I was really impressed with Werner's detailed descriptions of the surroundings and other inhabitants of the jungle. He wasn't too wordy, but he made me feel like I was actually there, suffering with the rest of them. Although, I have to admit, I think I've lost count of how many Bonerippers Thanquol has gone through.

You don't have to be a Warhammer fan to appreciate the excellent fantasy adventure that CL Werner has written. I can't wait for the third book, Thanquol's Doom - I've already marked the release on my calendar. I just hope we see more of Thanquol next time...and it had better not be the last one!!

Not as good as Grey Seer
By R. Landaker
Sad to say but the second skaven novel by CL Werner was no where near as good as the first one, Grey Seer. This doesn't mean that the book was terrible. It was still written in CL Werner's discriptive and imaginative writing style. Werner did an even better job of showing how they skaven are their own worst enemies and even though they are so cunning and evil, at times they do the stupidest things. Unfortunately, where Temple of the Serpent fails the supporting cast of antagonists just weren't as compelling this time around as in Grey Seer. Maybe it's becuase the lizardmen are so far removed from normal Warhammer stories. Maybe it was because the other characters that were in Lustria the same time as Thanquol just seemed to be morons and really boring to read about. Most likely it was probably both of these things. Read Temple of the Serpent if you are a CL Werner fan or you want to maintain continuity because you have read Grey Seer, but don't expect to be overwhelmed by it.

A Wickdly Fun Fantasy Read
By David Stutzbach
In this novel featuring the fantastic Thanquol, we are taken to the jungles of Lustria and encounter the lizardmen. C.L. Werner does a wonderful job of bringing to life the spirit that infuses two races from the Warhammer universe that don't see nearly enough play. With the lizardmen we are treated to a completely alien way of thinking that skews away from just giving them a savages mentality. I could feel a bit of the Lovecraftian cult undertones coming through the lizardmen. Not as strong as their Aztec inspired heritage but it was there and gave yet another layer. How easy it would have been to fall into this trap when writing for a species that by most accounts is devoid of emotion. The ideas put forth here give a voice to oft overlooked group, and I for one wouldn't mind seeing another excursion into Lustria or perhaps even for the "Great Math" to coincide with a trip to the rest of the Warhammer world.

Something else we are given in the beginning is a vivid brush stroke of the jungle itself. Colorful, exotic, and above all dangerous. The author really made sure that we felt the claustrophobia from being just completely engulfed by the trees, vines, the torture of the heat and humidity, the wild animals, and the viscous plants. From start we are encouraged to believe that any venture taken into the jungles is dangerous and that one must have their wits about them at all times. Sadly in the latter half of the novel this seems to be forgotten and put to the way side. It's as though one of the characters of the book completely changed their attitude and manner with little rhyme or reason. That danger and sense of foreboding that is layered in the beginning completely evaporates by the end. I felt let down by this but not enough to not have thoroughly enjoyed the book.

The human characters in this book are not the main attraction and at times became a force for detachment. Their story a little more then a pasted together tale of the dangers of greed and the power of love (though it didn't feel like love, so lets call it kinship). The sailors and their emissary seemed pigeonholed in the story to solve a problem that Thanquol encounters at the midway point. Their was very little life to them, perhaps just being out shadowed by all the other happenings, their appearances throughout the novel, always seemed to pull me out of the story and act like a speed bump. It felt as if I had read about these people on various occasions and certainty the romantic arc was seen from the moment the characters names and jobs are revealed. Don't get me wrong they had their moments of wit and intrigue but two of the characters who could have added extra dynamics to the story are either killed of prematurely (the elf) or are simply left as deus ex machina (the priest). A more gripping and perhaps less predictable story path would have been to follow the priest more closely as he comes to grips with these worshipers of other gods, and the test of faith his environment could have brought him.

The teeming hordes are written in this book with such glee and a pitch perfect voice behind what makes the Skaven tick it's hard not lap it up. The constant backstabbing, the wanton switching of alliances any time fear gripped the group, the over the top groveling. Throughout the novel I found myself chuckling aloud, Werner has given a voice to Thanquol and it's so much fun to listen to the gears of his mind whizzing about. The cowardice with which he carries himself is only out-shined by those brief moments where he realizes that the only way to escape with his tail intact is to draw upon his great power. We see his relationship with the Horned Rat (a Skaven deity) more clearly and the reverence he well and truly holds for his god. I defiantly think the various religions could have played a heavier role and thought at any moment we were going to see a more intellectual war follow along with your standard Warhammer violence. Finally we are given a Boneripper worthy of this Grey Seer master, and the cunning way in which he acquires his loving bodyguard, is inventive and falls perfectly within the ethos of Thanquol and the Skaven at large. Werner wisely never lets the reader feel that Thanquol is suddenly going to befriend anybody, nor trust them as his paranoia takes it's roller coaster ride through out the book. He is such a great character to read about and follow along with in his various sinister plots and schemes all to advance the Skaven race, the Horned Rat, but more to the point his own standing within Skavendom. I know there is another Thanquol and Boneripper novel headed our way (entitled Thanquols Doom) I'm just praying to the Horned Rat it's not the last. There is a rich character here who gets better with every appearance, it would be a shame to let him disappear into the Warhammer annals with out a few more mis-adventures. The other Skaven in the book help to drive the story along and showcase the race in a perfect light. What's great about the more recent novels is that they are more focused on the Skaven. It's nice that we don't need to indulge every clan (like we see in Skavenslayer). In this way we are given more precise characters with a stronger narrative between them and the Grey Seer.

When diving into these novels, one has to know what they are reading, and take it at face value. These books aren't world changing treatises on life's larger problems but there are damn fine fantasy reads, that help give life to universe that has a long history behind it. Walk into this book with the right mindset and you will find your self leaving very satisfied.

High school reunion and murder
By Dawn Dowdle
Geraldine Porter and her granddaughter, Madison, go to San Francisco to accompany Rosie Norman, an old student of Gerry's, to her thirtieth high school reunion. Gerry is looking forward to seeing some of her old students. David Bridges, star athlete, is who Rosie is looking forward to seeing. He's been sending her gifts and she's expecting a romantic reunion.

When David is murdered and Rosie is a suspect, Gerry sets out, with a little help from Madison, to solve the murder and take suspicion off Rosie.

I like this series a lot. All the miniatures she creates sound really interesting. I wish there were pictures of them. I like the way she started using Madison's computer skills more in this one. I also enjoyed the descriptions of San Francisco since I was there once and recognized some of them.

Having a murder set around a reunion was great, too. There are always old jealousies that can be capitalized on. This is a great series and a quick cozy mystery to read. I highly recommend it and the full series.

Intricate plotting
By Robert A. Olson
Margaret Grace returns to to her miniaturist novels with the most complex plot in this series to date. While I personally would love to see her return to her Camille Minichino personna with a new periodic table mystery, I'll have to be satisfied with this series. Maybe it is just because I recently returned from a high school reunion, but I could relate to the characters. They seemed like classmates I had known. The author sprinkled "red herrings" throughout and kept me guessing as to the murderer's identity until the end. The post-resolution wrap-up seemed a bit slow, but there were a lot of ends to be tied up. While complex, I enjoyed as much as the smell of Ghiradelli chocolate. (You'll have to read the book to understand this reference.)

Full-Scale Curiosity, Miniature Impulse Control
By Kindle Customer
I feel as if I'm quibbling. The plot is well-developed, the characters are well-rounded, and the writing is not really an issue. But
I have to admit a prejudice here. There's a fine line for me between appropriate curiosity on the part of an amateur sleuth and sheer, dumb, inappropriate intrusiveness. This, and all the "Miniature" books that I've read cross that line for me. I suppose that it's a way around the Constitutional barriers to all-out investigation, such as rules of evidence, probable cause, etc. Many of us ARE frustrated by these factors, and an author may certainly be tempted to cast these aside to advance the story and the heroine's status. Each reader must ultimately decide the level of reckless hubris he or she can tolerate in a character. Let's just say that were she the grandmother of my child, Gerry Porter wouldn't be spending much time with her.
