When the St. George girls and their friend Lizzy Elmsworth aren't accepted in New York society because their bloodlines just don't go back far enough, no matter how rich they are, the St. George governess recommends that they go to England. Here they quickly make grand marriages--one rattled young husband declares that they are really "buccaneers"--but becoming a duchess does not bring happiness to Nan St. George. Initially the overshadowed little sister, Nan emerges as an independent, self-possessed young woman who makes a momentous decision that shocks everyone--even her less stuffy compatriots--and her transformation is heartening to watch. Beautifully written, compelling characters.

Most of us know Edith Wharton either through
reading Ethan Frome in high school, or having
seen The Age of Innocence at the movie

theater. While she is best know for these works
they are dim in tone and portray the oppressive
nature of society.
In The Buccaneers, Wharton presents us with a group
of young women who have been rejected by
late 19th Century NY society, and journey to
England in search of husbands. Each of the
characters in fully drawn, and while Wharton
maintains her description of society as oppressive, she
counters this with the idealism and hope
of her brave young women and societal rules that with time are changing.
These women for the most part strive
to attain happiness, and unlike Wharton's
other principal characters, do acheive it.
This is probably the only Wharton novel
to end on a note of happiness and hope.
Combined with the richly drawn backdrop of 19th
century English & American society, it makes
for an enchanting and provocative read.

American Beauties Seek British Titles/Brits Seek American $$

Edith Wharton's last novel opens at the height of the racing season in Saratoga, NY, in 1876. Here America's 'nouveau riche' women gather; mothers and daughters who have been shunned by the elite, 'old money' society, scheme to marry their girls into the British aristocracy. Four beautiful young women become fast friends, as they dream and scheme together of potential suitors and titles in far off England. An English woman, unmarried and sophisticated, is hired to instruct the four friends in 'all that is necessary' to be successfully presented into British society. The girls' quest is most certainly not an impossible one. Many eligible, young aristocrats are short of funds necessary to keep up their vast estates. They are more than willing to marry American money, especially when wrapped in a beautiful, charming package, which will allow them to live in the style to which they are accustomed.
The story is told through the eyes, and from the hearts, of these young debutantes - wide-eyed, innocent and full of fun and American energy. Their longed-for entry into English society, and their subsequent marriages, joys and disappointments, as well as their strong, never waning, friendship for each other, is chronicled here with fascinating detail. The world of their childish fantasies is not the world of reality, as romance fades and financial worries, marital infidelities and lost love take the place of past dreams. They each struggle with the conflict between individual and social fulfillment, repressed sexuality, and the manners and mores of Britain's 'old families.' They discover secrets that were kept from them during courtship - intrigues, and hidden, devastating character flaws in their matrimonial choices.
Edith Wharton's descriptions of the wonderful American and British settings - the gorgeous countryside, great homes and extravagant furnishings, lavish clothing and courtship rites are remarkable. Each of the four young women have much in common, although their characters are quite different. Part of the glory of this novel is Wharton's development of her characters and their growth, as the young women mature with time and experience. The lesser characters are vividly drawn and complex. Her portrayal of the conflict between the American old society and the immense wealth of the newly rich robber barons and their socially ambitious wives, is an accurate and compelling glimpse of our past.
I know that Edith Wharton died before completing this extraordinary novel. I could wish, along with thousands of others, I am sure, that she had been allowed to live long enough to complete this masterpiece. However, Marion Mainwaring's conclusion does not diminish my immense enjoyment of the book in the least.

Died with Wharton

The first two-thirds of THE BUCCANEERS is brilliant, Wharton's at the top of her form -- hilarious, penetrating, exciting, effortless. Before reading, I didn't know and didn't want to inform myself precisely where the original material ended; I wanted to perpetuate the hope that there could be another great Wharton novel I hadn't read. But the book dies after chapter 29. It's like falling off a cliff. You have to be pretty insensible not to feel it yourself, and it's tremendously disappointing. I couldn't read more than a few pages of the added material, and then quit out of loyalty. Still, the Wharton first draft is a kick to read -- if for no other reason, for instance, than to see what a perfect first chapter looks like.

Amazing!

I have loved this series for years. And waited very impatiently for this book. And I can honestly say it didn't dissapoint. A smooth reading flow and so much depth in the drama / love department that you just can't help but love reading Clair's story. 10stars for sure. Now I can't wait for more of her new journey and hopefully some more answers on the marks. Great book for most ages above 15

Was this even Casey Odell that wrote this story?

It makes me quickened to report that this tale is not like the others of this series, which is why I wonder if there wasn't a ghost writer. Entrapped does offer answers to long posed questions, but it's cadence is quite different than the others. The other two books in the Cursed Magic series are fast paced and energetic. This book is very mellow, slow building, and less action.

I don't wish to sway anyone from Casey Odell, but to share my disappointment with the discontinuity of this third book.

A Delightful Read

Alike as Two Bees is populated by characters whose energy and exuberance will stay with me for a long time.
The author evokes Classical Greece by portraying the every day life of a group of stone-masons who are under the guidance of fair but stern Nikias.
Our hero is twenty-year old Philon who might be quiet but is skilled at his craft and ever-ready to come to the aid of young Antolios, a wonderful character with a charming mix of child-like naivety and an adult's perception of knowing exactly what's going on.
The antagonist, sneering Aristion, unknowingly brings Philon and scarred Hilarion together.
Elin Gregory's deceptively subtle prose takes the fast paced plot to a satisfying conclusion in the heat of a perfect day. She has the enviable skill of producing rich and deep characters, this time in a story that was hard to put down - it had me glued to the page.
If I have any criticism it perhaps lies in the fact that Alike as Two Bees is too short. The warm characters the author has created deserve more exposure and I feel there is much more in young, feisty Antolios. I'd love to think that I'll meet him again and maybe check up on the adventures of Philon and Hilarion.

Alike as Two Bees Elin Gregory

Set in Ancient Greece, 'Alike as Two Bees' by Elin Gregory tells the tale of Philon, an apprentice sculptor, and a soldier named Hilarion; how they meet, develop a mutual attraction, and fall in love. The detailed descriptions of the operation of a stone masonry gave me a greater appreciation for the magnificence of Greek architecture. I've seen many pictures of these amazing buildings and statues, but never stopped to think about someone having to carve every detail by hand.

The characters in this story are brilliantly portrayed – Nikias, wise and benevolent; Anatolios, his son, with his naivety and youthfulness; Eutychos, who is wealthy and pompous, and Aristion, his son, a spoiled rich kid and a bully; and of course, the lovers Philon, who is young but not completely naïve, and Hilarion, a kind and just man. Philon and Hilarion see in each other what most people can't: passion, an appreciation for beauty, and someone with whom they can find respect and love. It was quite touching, with a good dose of angst thrown in for good measure, to watch their relationship develop and flourish.

‘Alike as Two Bees’ by Elin Gregory is an endearing love story which is well written, with fabulous characters and a good plot. Although the poetic language is a bit confusing at times, it definitely helps set the historical mood. For a brief story, it covers a lot of ground and neatly ties up all the loose ends. I became quite attached to the characters and, although they ride off into the sunset to their happily ever after at the end of the story, I'd love to read more about them in the future. I'd recommend this book to anyone wanting to read a sweet historical romance where love prevails regardless of the circumstances. Thanks, Elin, for an entertaining read. About the Author
In 1996, while still an undergraduate, Dr. Julian Darius founded what would become Sequart Research & Literacy Organization. After graduating magna cum laude from Lawrence University (Appleton, Wisconsin), he obtained his M.A. in English, authoring a thesis on John Milton and utopianism. In 2002, he moved to Waikiki, teaching college while obtaining an M.A. in French (high honors) and a Ph.D. in English. In 2011, he founded Martian Lit, which publishes creative work, including his Martian Comics. He currently lives in Illinois.

A great book on a weird book

Who doesn't love Jack Kirby? The man is like the affable grandfather that made, then broke, the mold for making comics. His style has been paid homage more in comics than even Kubrick has in film. But, for all Kirby's lovableness there was a weirdness to him. One that was salient in works like the 2001 comic book adaptation. Dr. Julian Darius is cutting through the weirdness to bring to light the major themes and tropes of Kirby's fantastic work. If you are a 2001 and/or Jack Kirby fan, you won't be disappointed.

Nice to see a critical review of Jack's work but it would have been nice to see some other opinions sprinkled in. There's a lot of "source material" out there -- from Mark Evanier to John Morrow to own kids -- so I'm sure it couldn't have been too difficult to shine a little more light on the subject. At any rate, anything written on Jack Kirby is better than nothing at all so in that respect I applaud the effort!

Interesting read on one of Jack Kirby's later works.

This was an interesting treatise on a comic book series. I'll give anyone props for writing about Jack Kirby (or any of the classic comic book art legends of the day), and this is one of Kirby's stranger works. Not sure if it qualifies as "weirdest" even in Jack's oeuvre, considering "Devil Dinosaur" and "The Eternals" from the same period.

The author does a good job covering the treasury-sized 2001: A Space Odyssey special and the individual issues of the short-lived series. Few non-comic fans will probably even remember the series, having been produced nearly a decade after the original movie had premiered. The only thing of note about it, besides Jack Kirby's work, was the introduction of the character that would become known as Machine Man. The rest was all Kirby - his take on another form of science fiction (he'd already done the ancient astronaut/Chariots of the Gods thing with The Eternals and his own unique mythos with the Fourth World/New Gods over at DC Comics).

It's an interesting and nearly enlightening read, but this is definitely just something for the comic book fan or the niche Arthur C. Clarke/Odyssey aficionado.

A clear and concise biography.

Yamamoto was regarded as one of Japan’s most able pre-WW2 naval officers who rose to become Naval Vice Minister prior to returning to those sea-going duties which saw him in command of Japan’s fleets when that war commenced.

Widely regarded as the architect of the attack on Pearl Harbour, from this exceedingly well researched book, we learn that the very idea of such an attack originated many years earlier. During 1927-8 Lieutenant Commander Ryunosuke Kusaka worked simultaneously as an instructor at the naval staff college and the aviation corps. His expertise was aerial tactics and he devised a training scenario which included an attack on Hawaii. He then went on to inject this “theory” into successive students - pilots and future staff officers, over that time. By 1940, therefore, the very idea of such an attack was firmly entrenched in to the minds of all those officers.

Defensive and attack scenarios are a basic part of the teachings of all armed forces. Japan’s senior naval staff had devised a training plan whereby Japan would attack the Philippines in the full expectation that the US Fleet would come the aid of that country whereupon the Japanese Fleet would then destroy the US Fleet at sea. When one officer attending such a training session asked “what do we do if the US fails to respond as expected?”, the official reply revealed an expectation of all Japanese officers to conform to the accepted thinking of their seniors!

This book reveals Japan’s pre-war tactical training as mostly wishful thinking and based on enemy forces doing exactly as was pre-determined by those in charge of strategic planning. In reality, all military plans are changed just as soon as the first shot is fired.

Doubtless, had he survived the war, Yamamoto would have faced a war crimes tribunal. Instead, he lost his life during a conflict which, albeit not of his making, was one in which he went on to play a major role. This book is about this senior Japanese officer from WW2. It is written by a Japanese who clearly understands his subject better than most - perhaps in a way that only a Japanese could. Consequently, we have as complete a biography as one might hope to find.
