About the Author

Jeffrey K. Liker, the author of the bestselling The Toyota Way, is Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan and co-owner of consulting firm Optiprise.

Michael Hoseus is Executive Director of the Center for Quality People and Organizations. He worked for Toyota's Georgetown, Kentucky plant for more than 12 years as a group leader, assembly plant manager, and manager of human resources.

The Center for Quality People and Organizations is a Toyota-supported nonprofit organization dedicated to sharing the Toyota Way with education, community, and business organizations through the experience of former Toyota leaders.

Another great Toyota book from Liker

Toyota Culture is the 5th book in "the Liker Toyota series". After Toyota Way, Toyota Way Fieldbook, Toyota Product Development and Toyota Talent, you would expect that there is less news to write about Toyota. Well, not true. Toyota Talent is the thickest book in the series with it's almost 600 pages of Toyota info.

Toyota Culture mainly covers HR practices and related policies. It describes this as "the people value stream". How does Toyota hire and train people (the detailed training processes are described in Toyota Talent). How do they grow inside the company. How does Toyota work with the local communities.

The book is separated in five parts:
- What is Toyota Culture?
- The Quality People Value Stream
- People Supporting Process
- Organizational Supporting Processes
- Learning from Toyota

The first part is some-of an introduction. It explores what "company culture" means by referring to the work of Ed Schein. Then it introduces "the people value-stream" which the rest of the book is organized around. Part 2 is about the value stream itself while part 3 and 4 are the supporting processes of the people value stream.

Part 2 talks about how Toyota does hiring and how they grow the people within the company. It starts with the hiring and from there onto the training part (which had some duplication with Toyota Talent) and then moved into problem solving, one of the essential parts of the Toyota culture. It ends with how Toyota builds its image and works with the local communities to improve the life of its employees.

The third part starts by looking at the Toyota organizational structure, work teams and the team leader role. From there it moves to safe workplaces and how the standard problem solving is also applied to workplace safety problems. The last 2 chapters are about visual management and servant leadership. How management acts as servants and teachers to the workers, enabling the value-added work.

The fourth part looks at organizational supporting processes and especially HR processes. Toyota still want people to have a job for life, even though this is not common outside Japan. It talks about how Toyota deals with ups and downs in resourcing and moves to HR policies and rewarding policies (an very interesting chapter!). Chapter 15 is a short introduction to Hoshin Kanri.

The last part is about learning from Toyota, the "what can you do" part which many books end with. The first two chapters describes a couple of Toyota Way implementations within Toyota itself, to try to learn from that. The last chapter (probably the best) looks at lean implementations and wonders why they fail. It tries to find general change recommendations to try to learn from Toyota while creating your own company culture.

Parts of the book were extremely good and, at other times, parts of the book were somewhat long and boring. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I had that possibility and decided to go to 5 stars since I felt the last chapter was really very good.

A couple of things that I didn't like. Most of the book talks about Toyota in the US and seldom talks about the Toyota culture in Japan. It's obvious the authors are most familiar with the Toyota US situation. Also, most of the book still has a manufacturing focus. There is very little about other functions (e.g. product development) within the book itself. The culture in the different functions is probably similar, but will also have differences. Things like organizational structures and teamwork will be different in the different functions and thats not covered.

All in all, another great Toyota book. Highly recommended for people who are interested in how Toyota works and why. I wouldn't recommend it as your first Toyota book, I'd probably then start with the Toyota Way book and move to this one after that.

A Great Book

Jeff Liker has produced another superb book in the Toyota Way series, this time with the help of Michael Hoseus. This volume is an even more Herculean effort at assembling detail than the last were. Every step of the process of recruiting, hiring, training, developing, integrating, and supporting the people who add the value to Toyota products is spelled out. It is amazingly content-rich.

And, once again Liker captures the essential message that what the management of Toyota does is not just a series of techniques, but rather a complex, interacting, systemic way of thinking. The attention to detail, the relentless, never-ending improvement and the ability to adhere to a basic set of values in the face of challenge after challenge is nothing short of extraordinary. Toyota deservedly sits on top of the competitive pile. No one does it better and, as this wonderful volume shows so clearly, it's damn hard work.

I have stopped wondering if America manufacturers will 'get it'. They won't. As much as The Toyota Way was a result of a particular time and a particular culture, our time (now) and our culture (just win, baby) preclude wide acceptance of these methods. Just read the book and imagine almost any of these management methods being adopted by American managers and you will see how wide the gulf truly is. And the unvarnished truth is that that gulf hasn't narrowed appreciably in the past 40 years.

But as a guide the book is extraordinarily useful. I would think it would be excellent reading for Human Resources professionals and Organizational Change and Organizational Development people.

It is a highly commendable effort and a very good book.

Essential reading if you want to sustain Lean Improvements

Lean is not sustainable without the culture to support it. This culture is a complex amalgam of leadership values, open communication, training and development, and measures to build trust. People are the key and, indeed, the early name for the Toyota Production System was the "Respect for Humanity" system. "Toyota Culture" describes how a supportive and continuously improving culture has been developed at Toyota's American plants. The book goes into considerable detail of the "People Value Stream" at Toyota and how it is sustained and developed. It is a long book packed with insights and case studies, but there are no quick fixes here - no "do this and you'll be sorted in a year" magic pills. It's a slow process of building trust and working together. That's what lean is all about and this book is essential reading for any manager aiming to build a continuously improving lean organisation for the long term. It is true that there are no quick fixes but surely the results, and the joy of working in such an organisation, make the effort worthwhile.

The author has written a wonderful book on the theme more talked about but less researched. The author has presented his social behavioral research and presented a wonderful book of insightful thinking. The author talks about the attitude as a deciding factor in the way we life our life. It is the outlook of a person which can change the happy thing into gloomy object. The author has illustrated how the change in attitude can be brought in life and consequently how our life can change in a miraculous manner.
The author claims that the degree of happiness in our life is proportionate to the positiveness of our thoughts and attitude.
A wonderful book to read and learn the best practices in life to lead a healthy and cheerful life.

Flip Your Switch to Positive with this Book!

Attitude Attitude Attitude: How to Change Behaviour and Attitude and Become the Person you Really Want to be by Allan Twain is a practical and very useful guide to gently persuade your thinking in a positive direction. In particular I like the idea of self-affirmation. Making sure you recognize and tell yourself about all the good things you do and are. These positive thoughts and actions will rub off into your everyday and soon you are going to be skipping around with a smile on your face instead of dragging your lazy butt around complaining about this, that and everything. The author does a nice job suggesting simple, practical and effective strategies to encourage your mind to habitually start looking for the good in things and that's only going to make you better. Good stuff Twain!

About the Author
David Joyce is one of the first people in the world to lecture on and hold postgraduate master's degrees encompassing both sports science and sports medicine. He has trained, rehabilitated, and maintained multiple World and Olympic Champions, along with more than 100 national champions and 300 national representatives. The first athletic performance coach in history to work with Team China after having worked with another national Olympic team, Joyce is currently head of athletic performance at Western Force, the most traveled team in world sport, in the toughest club rugby competition in the world spanning Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. As a strength and conditioning profession, I have made it a habit to stay current with mounds of information and misinformation that exists within our profession. The information presented by Dan Lewindon and the subsequent authors in this text is very useable and applicable to todays athlete. The text covers a focused view of athlete enhancement from suboptimal performance to elite athletes. As a strength and conditioning professional with over twenty five years of experience I would unequivocally recommend this text to any one interesting in increasing their own physical performance.

A must have sports training compendium!

This is an amazing read and has given me elite conditioning methods and protocols in a concise volume. The breadth and variety of sports represented by the authors makes it all the more informative. It goes into a great deal of technical detail, making it a useful tool for an elite coach, whilst also helping to extend the knowledge of up and coming trainers. A must have compendium for the serious athletic coach – highly recommended!

At last an awesome book that puts so many theories into practice by well experienced coaches! Every coach worth his salt will be able to apply the information gathered from this book to his/her individual athletes. Another thing that I like about it is the fact that each coach give his/her own view or approach to their field of specialization, and although some of the coaches have different opinions about the same topics, each coach can validate his approach with the necessary science and even more important experience.

About the Author
Dr. Cynthia Crosson-Tower is a national expert on child abuse and neglect and the author of numerous books and publications including Understanding Child Abuse and Neglect, Exploring Child Welfare: A Practice Perspective, When Children Are Abused: An Educator’s Guide to Intervention, A Clergy Guide to Child Abuse and Neglect and How Schools Can Combat Child Abuse and Neglect. Dr. Crosson-Tower taught in the Behavioral Sciences Department at Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts for 24 years, also founding and serving as the Director of the Child Protection Institute there. She maintains a private practice, Harvest Counseling and Consultation, specializing in the treatment of survivors of abuse and perpetrators of sexual abuse. Dr. Crosson-Tower served on the subcommittee to develop protocol for the Cardinal’s Commission of the Archdiocese of Boston and became a part of the Implementation and Oversight Committee of the Archdiocese’s Office of Child Advocacy.

Good text for the course I teach

Good text for the course I teach. BUT, it is WAY over-priced for a paperback textbook, and students have a hard time being able to afford it. That is a shame! I have used the textbook in a number of editions for many years, but am considering adopting something that is REASONABLE in price for my students.

good service, my book did come between the time that it said it was supposed to come-the last day they said the book was supposed to come. I suppose it still came and it promised it would come between the certain dates. Although I was stressed out because I needed the book for school I really cant complain because the book still came in the time frame. Thank you!

Sarat Chandra, cut off from his familiar world, is thrown together with a bunch of boys who hail from diverse backgrounds - Marwaris, Anglo-Indians, Armenians and Muslims. Within the school’s portals he must adapt and conform to its ancient traditions. He finds a new name, makes friends and discovers the first flush of romance but struggles to come to terms with his family’s precarious financial situation, which fuels his inherent anxiety.
Much like Sarat Chandra, the city too is grappling to come of age. Mired in post-Independence politics and economic decline, anxiety and gloom has spread through the populace jostling for space in an increasingly crowded and unrelenting city. The elite have taken over the mansions left behind by the colonialists while the poor throng the pavements and empty spaces.
Will Sarat Chandra find his place in the city or is he forever doomed to be the outsider, the ‘mofussil’ boy with an identity crisis?
This is a story about a generation numbed by the anxiety of the Sixties and the Seventies, about music dying in the bars, entire populations quietly fleeing the city and yesteryear's generation fortifying themselves within anachronistic colonial institutions to hold out against the assaults of change.

Astounding Age

This is a novel about a boy, Sarat Chandra Chatterjee finding his place in the world, facing the changes and grasping at what life throws at him. Age of Anxiety is set in the era when our country was still learning and accepting the changes Independence had brought. Sarto, is an only child and this novel takes us from the time he is in school to the time he finds himself at an juncture where he realises that he has finally found a place for himself and what he wants form life. It is also a coming of age story, taking the reader to a bygone era when life was both simpler and difficult at the same time. I have shared a few of the lines that express some of the elements that make this book a good read.

“He had to confront the unknown, listen, watch, assess and then act.”

It starts off with his experiences at school, an Anglo-Indian School still clinging to its illustrious past. I found reading these like revisiting my own school. There is something comforting yet exciting about school and Indranil depicts it very well. Sarto and his anxiety is what the novel is all about. How he is dictated by his troubles, inadequacies and apprehensions.

“Sometimes you should stand up for what is right, even if it means being a bad boy”

The part where he is finding his profession, lucky enough to have no pressure to just work but to find his true calling is a lesson. He works his way into writing, finding his calling and a balance between just work and something he is passionate about too.

“It was an awe inspiring spectacle of steel and concrete structures reaching out from the bowels of the earth to the sky, a design stolen from some celestial architect and hammered and shaped by humans.”

When he visits the Steel factory is my favourite part, it took me to the time I did the project work, factory visits and industrial training for my post graduation. Indranil has written a balanced book highlighting each stage and aspect of Sarto’s life as he yearns to shed his anxiety and trepidation.

The language is the biggest pull of this book. The author writes with an exceptional flow, no errors no words that jar or don’t fit in. The language mirrors the age for which the novel has been penned. The author knows his craft and uses this to his advantage. As the book progresses and Sarto ‘grows up’ so does his language and his way of expression. Another thing is that even thought the book uses a few big words, even I had to look up a couple; still the language is easy to understand.

I will be honest, a memoir is like reading a person’s life story and unless it is highly embellished with ‘fiction’ or is abput an controversial person it will have some part where you just want to skip through however I can safely say that Age of Anxiety has a flow, a story that unfolds slowly, bit by bit yet kept me interested. At each page Sarto was the kid you wanted to root for and that is what is special about this book. You find a glimpse of your own childhood, teenage or youthful innocence in these pages.

The time when the Raj Hangover was so strong and Sarto was like the 70’s flower child – smoking, drinking, marijuana/ ganja and that hint of first love. Free yet restrictions of a post colonial India are so well expressed. I found the parts devoted to smoking pot very interesting and detailed; typical of how it is shared and used. How boys bond over something so basic and liberating, no wonder it is still so popular!!

The rush of first love and Nayantara; I just loved her name and the changes she brought in Sarto. This was by far one of the absorbing chapters in this book. Just a s their relation changed so did they and I liked the fact that the author gave the requisite importance to ‘first love’ in the final awaking of Sarto as a man who found hid spot under the sun!!

The book is meant to be savored and read as you reminisce about the golden olden days. A perfect book to revisit those carefree yet anxious days of looking inward and out, searching for the real and true you!

Superb Read

It's different.
This phrase is oft repeated whenever we read a book. But there never has been a bundle of pages where this phrase takes its true form. Breaking every boundary of genre and rules the author Indranil Banerjee has created a character, Sarat Chandra, who grows before you in this coming to age novel, Age of Anxiety.

When the English bid us farewell
When our dear British rulers bid us adieu, there remained a gap in our society, however peculiar it may sound, but there was group of people who were totally ‘addicted’ to the British way of life. As the Britishers left our country, the elites of every region in India stepped in to fill in the positions left empty upon their departure. Our own personal set of Indian noblemen stepped and formed the first group of Indian Bureaucrats. This story is a window that opens into the both the planes of the society, when class division dominated over caste division.

Growing up
Set in post-colonial Calcutta, Sarat Chandra Chatterjee grows up with many privileges that many middle class boys of his age were deprived of. But enjoying the privileges that went beyond his family's means also came with a price.

"Sarat Chandra, unlike his most of his school mates, had seen all this at close quarters for his father never could afford a chauffeur driven car to ferry him back and forth from school. He believed the other boys did not experience similar anxieties because they were shielded by their affluent backgrounds and had no concept of the world beyond the confines of their inviolate environment."

When his father lost his job, times were tough for the family and Sarat was almost expelled from the school. However, destiny intervened and he was able to continue his education without any hindrances. At least outwardly.

An insightful read

The story-line: Interesting, insightful and relatable, the story takes one especially those that were around in the 1960s, down memory lane. The period and those living in the India of those times have been portrayed to perfection. The emotions of Sarto and his buddies, parents as well as other characters who find a place in the story are penned beautifully. One can easily experience their joys, their sorrows and frustrations as the story proceeds. In fact one can feel the story unfold before one’s eyes. The story has its fair measure of humour too. In fact there are places where I could not help laughing out loud.

While reading the book I was transported to my childhood, the grand European style building that housed my school and my school-days. The mention of ‘chooran’ brought a smile on my face. It reminded me of the ‘chooran-wala’ who was a permanent feature outside the school gate during recess time.

Characterization: Bang on! Each minute detail is presented with perfection making the characters come live before one’s eyes.

Language: Crisp and lucid. The author’s strong grip on the language is reflected in each word, each sentence thus adding value to the book.

Pace: Perfect. There was not a single moment when I felt I’d like to take a break.

About the Author
W. David Moon is a money manager by trade. In his real life he and his wife of 28 years raise 13-year-old twins on a farm in Knoxville, Tennessee, where his weekends regularly resemble old episodes of “Green Acres.” During the week, he is the president of Moon Capital Management, an investment research and management firm. After decades of financial writing, Thoughts Are Things is his first non-business related work. Since 1998, David has written “MarketView,” a weekly business commentary for newspaper publisher Scripps. His research and editorial writing have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Barron’s and Corporate Board Member magazine and he has been a regular contributor to CNBC's “After the Bell.” David serves on the investment committee for the City of Knoxville, the Board of Visitors of the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine and is the former Chairman of the Knoxville Zoo board of directors. David earned bachelor’s and MBA degrees (both cum laude) from the University of Tennessee, where he was named a member of the Academic All-Southeastern Conference football team his senior year.

My kids are already asking for the yellow book!

I am a third grade teacher and I am reading this book every morning to my kids. We have only been reading it for a week. If I forget they will remind me. "You forgot to read from the yellow book!" The entries are short, to the point and relevant to everyone. The language is kid friendly but not condescending. Perfect for my classroom.

an elementary text book for the home study of ethics, morality and civility.

I gave this to my brother-in-law for Christmas- and my sister loves it. He reads the daily entry to my niece and nephew as a part of their devotional family time. It's a very down to earth book that provides a straight forward and easy way to introduce serious issues and address weighty questions in terms that children of all ages can grasp. It's not merely a book of affirmations, though there is plenty of affirming wisdom between the covers, this seems more akin to an elementary text book for the home study of ethics, morality and civility. There's also a lot of good, everyday advice for creative and successful living - common sense stuff that's refreshing to see in print.

In addition to the thoughts for each day, the book notes holidays and special birthdays including little known but important people who've had a major impact on life - like Percy Spencer, the inventor of Microwave popcorn. Seriously - how many times a year are you grateful for that guy's genius (and I hadn't even heard of him).

It's pleasantly light hearted, often fun but never shy about tackling difficult subjects either. In some ways it's a good handbook for raising kids - especially when you start having to answer questions about bad things that happen, dealing with pain, making mistakes and dealing with the aftermath when those mistakes hurt other people.

This work is a tool that establishess a daily process of reverent contemplation for both parents and children as it presents and reinforces core values and ethics in a way that your child can understand, use and benefit from immediately.

It is a daily devotional that may begin at any time and is suited to a wide variety of ages.

If respect, diligence, honesty, thoughtfulness, a willing work ethic and other such virtues are something you would instill in your child, this book is for you.

clear direction on putting together a security survey

I have prepared several security surveys throughout the last couple of years and have always found that they were missing something. Once I started looking through this book I was given clear direction on the useful information required when conducting a security survey.
This book describes all the main sections required for a security review: Scoop of the project, organization assesment and requirements, physical security, internal controls, data system and records, emergency planning, and proprietary information, business impact analysis, survey questionary, etc.
This book goes into details on planning and analysis but does not give detailed techniques on aquireing information or what an effective security system looks like. It assumes the reader has a strong security background and is able to handle the details of investigation, interviewing, testing and evaluation. This book only touches on these topics.

Review after using Risk Analysis and the Security Survey

I bought the book to use as a reference while doing my very first risk analysis. It helped me a lot with my project. I found it easy to read and use as a reference. I used the format in the book as a guide when writing up the risk analysis I did.

About the Author
Ron's 30 plus years as an educator, director of an innovative graduate program, and most recently as a consultant have confirmed the three fundamental beliefs.
1. Mistrust is often the epicenter of organizational chaos, pain and waste.
2. These costs can be transformed into profitable, productive energy when people learn to trust each other and themselves.
3. This transformation does not come about by magic. It requires vigilance, self awareness and the disciplined application of values, principles, and skills--all of which contribute to collective learning.

Ron received his doctorate in psychology from Claremont Graduate School in 1965; was an intern with the National Training Laboratories in 1969; co-created the LIOS Master of Arts in the Applied Behavioral Sciences; and with John Runyan, founded The Leadership Group. He has consulted and trained extensively in the United States and abroad and has written numerous articles in professional journals.

The focus of his entire career has been to help individuals learn from each other.

Excellent, Insightful, Eye-opening

The skills and awarenesses that this book teaches can be invaluable to any reader. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wishes to improve his or her interactions with others. This book introduces or reinforces the concepts that every person's viewpoint is unique, that we each have our own reality or story, and that we bring that story to every interaction we have with others. Thus, a critical component of having effective and meaningful dialog with others is our ability to be aware of our own stories "in the moment" and understand that others have their own stories. The book offers techniques to enhance our skills at learning through interaction. The technique, "learning from mutual inquiry" is incredibly helpful, as it shows how we can share information about our own perspective and invite others to do the same in a non-threatening manner. This is a skill that I believe very few people have mastered. In addition to focusing on heightening awareness about our one on one interactions, a good portion of this book identifies how a reader may apply these skills to analyzing and improving systems (for example, analyzing patterns of communication behavior and potentially improving those interactions based on uncovering why those patterns exist). Hats off to Ron Short for sharing his wealth of knowledge. I wish I read this book sooner!

Rethinking the Concept Relationship

I was on my second reading of this book. It needs re-reading because it is easy reading and there are profound understandings that need to be mused on individually. This time it struck a new and powerful chord in me.

In the Vietnam era I was in the military and at about the age of 23 suffered some life-threatening, horrific and unbearable experiences. They were so unbearable to me that I tried to escape with suicide and failing that or because of it remembered nothing about what had happened to me. I was not even curious as to why I had made the suicide attempt, which was being staggeringly disconnected from myself. When I was 56 the PTSD caused me to implode and require therapy. It took three years to remember what had happened to me and then in tiny details, flashes of experience laid on top of one another until the shape of my experience became discernible.

A period of my life was laid open to me that had been lost. This was a fragment of myself that was amnesiac. I had to work at being changed by this buried part of myself, at redefining who I was. In doing this I came to know that there are many fragmented parts of what is 'me'. Ironically, the same principles of interaction within myself were reflected in the first chapters of this book. One part of me had finally 'decided to tell her story'. Other parts of myself were rocked by the impact of that. Parts of me insisted I was imagining this, other parts wanted more than anything to believe I was imagining it. I didn't want to learn about being a mixture of segments of myself rather than one clearly defined individual. I didn't want to acknowledge disagreements and conflicts in myself and I didn't want to change.

I am going to read this book again. I am going to start it with the intention of listening to the parts of me I don't want to hear from. It is scary and a little exciting too.

Learning communication mis-steps

This book was highly recommended to me and I bought it hoping to get some new insights into the interpersonal challenges of speaking assertively and holding difficult conversations. I teach and consult on these topics and am always looking for ways to help students and clients make sense of how they can strategically develop new behaviors.

While the book was more "academic" than I had been led to believe, I found some great nuggets of insight into why we get caught up in conversation spirals that confuse and frustrate.

For me, Lesson 2 in Part 3 was worth the price of the book. The example Short uses is real in its simplicity and he unpacks the example's dynamics in a way that clearly makes intelligible the dysfunctional components of the conversation example.

I recommend this book to seasoned professionals, i.e. teacher or trainer, as it is a lean examination of the inner workings of conversations that sabotage relationships.
