A rare Maugham story specifically interesting because of the movie made from it which avoids the kinkier parts but they are there in subtle ways in the actors' performances, especially Deanna Durbin's. Gene Kelly plays the husband and Gale Sondergaard is the mother in law and the locale is San Francisco as well as Paris.

"Christmas Holiday" takes place in a period of interlude between the two world wars in England and France when the worst in world affairs was not over but yet to come. For Charley Mason, the young Englishman the gift of 5 days in Paris his parents have given him turns out to be less the anticipated celebration and more of an unsettling interlude in his own life. It develops for him into a revelatory journey that blemishes his happy heart and privileged home life. He reunites in Paris with a troubled boyhood friend Simon now a news reporter who he hasn't seen for two years. Charley is bewildered and tries to gain perspective on Simon's seeming metamorphosis into a self-confessed misanthropist and insensitive manipulator. It is Simon who lays out all the sores of humanity for Charley's tender sensibilities to collide with. At the Sérail, a cabaret where bare breasted dancing girls glitter in harem pants and turbans and can be taken upstairs for a price, Simon pairs Charley with "Princess Olga" the working name of an enigmatic Russian girl named Lydia. Charley is ensnared by Lydia's anguished life story, her orphaned state, her poverty and unreasonable devotion to a convict husband whose imprisonment and guilt she feels she must share through her own continued suffering. For a brief time the reality of Charley 's respectable, comfortable and secure existence becomes entwined with those whom fate has not so similarly blessed. His"Holiday" changes him forever.

Here again Maugham's gift for telling a story is evident. He uses words with a facility that brings a narrative to life in a way that engages the imagination and enables the reader to vividly picture the characters and events. A recommended read.

A product of the English Gentleman schools goes to Paris

Christmas Holiday is probably Somerset Maugham's forth most important novel after "Of Human Bondage","The Moon and Sixpense" and "The Razors Edge." At the time of its publication, "Cakes and Ale" was considered to be his most well written book, but it has not withstood the test of time. It is also about writers, and writers writing about writers is lazy self-centered writing. Holiday in the European language is also a vacation, and this is a story of a young man on a five day trip to Paris. Instead of exclusively Maxim's, The Moulon Rouge, and sight seeing he falls inside the seamy side of life. The story takes us from Paris to French Guinea and Devil's Island prison colony. The young man returns to London a changed man, but not the way his parents intended. On another level Maugham was making a statement on the self complacency of the British and their reluctance to fight Fascism {i.e. Jack London's "The Iron Heal"} in 1937, about the time Maugham started the book. The book was recieved with bad reviews from Graham Greene and glowing reviews from many others, including Glenway Wescott who included it in a Somerset Maugham anthology he put together in book form. This is not to be confused with great literature but it is a good story and very readable, like all of Maugham. It is also for anyone interested in Paris before the War. I have recommended it to three of my well-read friends and they all thanked me for it.

About the Author
Dorothy Marcic, EdD, MPH, is a professor at Columbia University and a former faculty member at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Marcic is also a former Fulbright Scholar at the University of Economics in Prague and the Czech Management Center, where she taught courses and did research in leadership, organizational behavior, and cross-cultural management. She teaches courses at the Monterrey Institute of International Studies and at the University of Economics in Prague, and she has taught courses and given presentations at the Helsinki School of Economics, Slovenia Management Center, College of Trade in Bulgaria, City University of Slovakia, Landegg Institute in Switzerland, the Swedish Management Association, Technion University in Israel, and the London School of Economics. She has served on the boards of the Organizational Teaching Society, the Health Administration Section of the American Public Health Association, and the Journal of Applied Business Research. Dr. Marcic has authored 12 books, including Organizational Behavior: Experiences and Cases, (South-Western Publishing, 6th Edition, 2001), Management International (West Publishing, 1984), Women and Men in Organizations (George Washington University, 1984), and Managing with the Wisdom of Love: Uncovering the Virtue in People and Organizations (Jossey-Bass, 1997), which was rated one of the top 10 business books of 1997 by Management General. In addition, she has had dozens of articles printed in publications such as Journal of Management Development, International Quarterly of Community Health Education, Psychological Reports, and Executive Development. Professor Marcic has conducted hundreds of seminars on various business topics and consulted for executives at various companies. Richard L. Daft, Ph.D., is the Brownlee O. Currey, Jr. Professor of Management and Principal Senior Lecturer in the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University, where he specializes in the study of leadership and organization theory. Dr. Daft is a fellow of the Academy of Management and has served on the editorial boards of Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, and Journal of Management Education. He was associate editor-in-chief of Organization Science and associate editor of Administrative Science Quarterly. Dr. Daft has authored or co-authored 13 books, including The Executive and the Elephant, Organization Theory and Design, and Management. Elizabeth Lennox writes contemporary romance novels featuring sheiks, business tycoons, royalty, and other sexy rich men. Her male lead characters are smart, driven and determined, but can still be sensitive and vulnerable. Elizabeth’s female lead characters come from a variety of backgrounds. They are strong, intelligent and independent, while still feminine and caring. This book was ok. The heroine was kinda whiny and weak. The hero had no consideration for her and expected after marrying her without her knowledge or consent and dropping her with zero contact for five years, that she'd just jump into being his wife. It was kind of a unbelievable story line. I mean what women after not hearing from a guy for 5 years would jump into bed with a guy. I mean even a guy she loved she'd be pissed and bitter enough to put up some fight! And why make her such a wuss? She's scared of spiders, animals, bugs, water, flying, driving, strangers, etc. couldn't she just have one phobia? It makes her very unlikable. You think "oh she's got her stuff together" in the beginning of the book only to find out he owned her apartment building. All her neighbors and maintenance guy are bodyguards. Her neighbor/friend that helps her with her son is a hired nanny. Her job is a company he bought so she could get paid a lot to do easy work. She just annoyed me.

Did not finish reading, stopped at 60% -- I don't feel love between the main characters

I bought this book because I really liked "The Sheik's Angry Bride" and I decided to go back and read Zahir's story. I don't care for Callie in this story. She is too negative when it comes to Zahir. She doesn't want anything to do with him, she doesn't want to go back to his country, she doesn't want him to know about his son (moot point), she doesn't want to believe they are married, she doesn't believe in the peace negotiations with his warring countries, she doesn't agree with the way he's trying to raise his son for responsibility, she is denying her attraction and her place in Zahir's life. After five years, Zahir comes to get his family to bring them back home. But I do not feel any love there, more like an obligation. All we get are references about her time in captivity, we are not told the story in that timeline, it is five years later. She is jealous of his time with his son, because now she has to share him, when it used to be only the two of them (mother and son).

Ms. E's book is delightful as always, with enough humor, romance, and dialogue to keep it interesting. The characters are well-developed and the book moves right along. I would've given Ms. E. 5 stars but there were too many unanswered questions in my mind. For example (to name a few):

1. This book picks up from the book "Dancing with the Dangerous Prince" that involved Crown Prince Zoran of Larcatia and Princess Ciara of Altair. If Sheik Zahir is now the ruler of Larcatia, what happend to Zoran and Ciara? We they exiled? Killed? All that is mentioned is that there was a "dramatic change in the leadership of the other 3 countries" and "last of the old guard died 6 months ago". I would think the parents of Zoran and Ciara might have died, but them? They were young and just beginning their married lives when the war broke out.

2. Is Zahir a younger brother of Zoran? Cousin? I'm confused.

3. The book ended upbruptly with Callie refusing to tell Zahir about her kidnapping and she finds out Zahir had been tortured, but he won't talk about that either. I guess they go merrily on their way. What really happened with Callie when she was kidnapped? She makes references to it and the reader can fill in the blanks to a certain extent, but more info would've been nice. Same with Zahir and his being tortured. It had to have impacted his life. (Although this question would've been nice to have answered it isn't vital to the story.)

4. They were separated for 5 years, we know Callie lived in Virginia, where she worked and what she did at her job. We know about Luca too, but what about Zahir? He just fought and negotiated for the whole 5 years?

I think if the book had been longer, Ms. E. would've had time to address these issues. I love her books and am so disappointed when they end. I'm just getting ready to settle down for a good read, when the book is over and I think to myself, "What? It just started."

I was devastated when Cassian fell off and did Josalyn dirty it felt like my heart broke.Andy did a whole turn around I hate she had to experience what she did but it was a lesson learned. She found love with Urban and her happily ever after. Zooey wasn't playing she went and got her man.It ended on a good note for everyone and they all got their happily ever after finally it might have taken some trials and tribulations but it was worth it.Part 2 did not disappoint!!!!!!

Loved this book... It picked up right where part 1 left off...It just kept getting better and better. .. These sisters Zooey, Andi, and Josalyn have come a long way and been through so much..... This book has more drama and heartache for these sisters... Josalyn and Cassian have been through so much in this relationship... For some reason Cassian could not get it right no matter what... Can he finally do it or does Josalyn have to finally walk away in order to be happy? Andi kept jumping from one artist to another all for money... Will Andi finally get herself together and stop using people and just love someone? Will she finally be able to walk away from Denim? Zooey had a good man in Qadir and she just couldn't be faithful.. Now he is happy in a new relationship and Zooey has been stabbed... Will Zooey be able to find happiness after all the dirt she has done? Or will she be alone forever? I have to say that I loved how this book read and how it all came to an end... I recommend this series if u want a good read...

The story picks up right where part 1 left off. This book had my emotions all over the place. A rollercoaster of a ride with plenty of drama and lies. I'm so happy that Josalyn and Cassian made it through all of the depression and addiction issues. He had me yelling at my kindle at times, and I had to remind myself, that it's only a book. Overall, this was a great read.

Fun reading.

Love the La. and New Orleans backdrop for his stories. Burke makes for fun reading with a little action and mystery. Like the Robicheaux character, he's kinda flawed like many of us.
