About the Author
In 1996, while still an undergraduate, Dr. Julian Darius founded what would become Sequart Research & Literacy Organization. After graduating magna cum laude from Lawrence University (Appleton, Wisconsin), he obtained his M.A. in English, authoring a thesis on John Milton and utopianism. In 2002, he moved to Waikiki, teaching college while obtaining an M.A. in French (high honors) and a Ph.D. in English. In 2011, he founded Martian Lit, which publishes creative work, including his Martian Comics. He currently lives in Illinois.

A great book on a weird book

Who doesn't love Jack Kirby? The man is like the affable grandfather that made, then broke, the mold for making comics. His style has been paid homage more in comics than even Kubrick has in film. But, for all Kirby's lovableness there was a weirdness to him. One that was salient in works like the 2001 comic book adaptation. Dr. Julian Darius is cutting through the weirdness to bring to light the major themes and tropes of Kirby's fantastic work. If you are a 2001 and/or Jack Kirby fan, you won't be disappointed.

Nice Starting Point

Nice to see a critical review of Jack's work but it would have been nice to see some other opinions sprinkled in. There's a lot of "source material" out there -- from Mark Evanier to John Morrow to own kids -- so I'm sure it couldn't have been too difficult to shine a little more light on the subject. At any rate, anything written on Jack Kirby is better than nothing at all so in that respect I applaud the effort!

Interesting read on one of Jack Kirby's later works.

This was an interesting treatise on a comic book series. I'll give anyone props for writing about Jack Kirby (or any of the classic comic book art legends of the day), and this is one of Kirby's stranger works. Not sure if it qualifies as "weirdest" even in Jack's oeuvre, considering "Devil Dinosaur" and "The Eternals" from the same period.

The author does a good job covering the treasury-sized 2001: A Space Odyssey special and the individual issues of the short-lived series. Few non-comic fans will probably even remember the series, having been produced nearly a decade after the original movie had premiered. The only thing of note about it, besides Jack Kirby's work, was the introduction of the character that would become known as Machine Man. The rest was all Kirby - his take on another form of science fiction (he'd already done the ancient astronaut/Chariots of the Gods thing with The Eternals and his own unique mythos with the Fourth World/New Gods over at DC Comics).

It's an interesting and nearly enlightening read, but this is definitely just something for the comic book fan or the niche Arthur C. Clarke/Odyssey aficionado.

A clear and concise biography.

Yamamoto was regarded as one of Japan’s most able pre-WW2 naval officers who rose to become Naval Vice Minister prior to returning to those sea-going duties which saw him in command of Japan’s fleets when that war commenced.

Widely regarded as the architect of the attack on Pearl Harbour, from this exceedingly well researched book, we learn that the very idea of such an attack originated many years earlier. During 1927-8 Lieutenant Commander Ryunosuke Kusaka worked simultaneously as an instructor at the naval staff college and the aviation corps. His expertise was aerial tactics and he devised a training scenario which included an attack on Hawaii. He then went on to inject this “theory” into successive students - pilots and future staff officers, over that time. By 1940, therefore, the very idea of such an attack was firmly entrenched in to the minds of all those officers.

Defensive and attack scenarios are a basic part of the teachings of all armed forces. Japan’s senior naval staff had devised a training plan whereby Japan would attack the Philippines in the full expectation that the US Fleet would come the aid of that country whereupon the Japanese Fleet would then destroy the US Fleet at sea. When one officer attending such a training session asked “what do we do if the US fails to respond as expected?”, the official reply revealed an expectation of all Japanese officers to conform to the accepted thinking of their seniors!

This book reveals Japan’s pre-war tactical training as mostly wishful thinking and based on enemy forces doing exactly as was pre-determined by those in charge of strategic planning. In reality, all military plans are changed just as soon as the first shot is fired.

Doubtless, had he survived the war, Yamamoto would have faced a war crimes tribunal. Instead, he lost his life during a conflict which, albeit not of his making, was one in which he went on to play a major role. This book is about this senior Japanese officer from WW2. It is written by a Japanese who clearly understands his subject better than most - perhaps in a way that only a Japanese could. Consequently, we have as complete a biography as one might hope to find.

In the late 1980s, the field of comparative economics and NATO faced a similar problem: the threat of obsolescence. The purpose of this book is to redirect study of what we called comparative economic systems toward analysis of the development of institutions and the effects of alternative institutional arrangements on economic performance. To that end, the book internalizes into a theoretical framework (1) the effects of alternative property rights on the costs of transactions and incentives structures, (2) the effects of the costs of transactions and incentives on economic behavior, and (3) the evidence for refutable implications of those effects. Analysis here focuses on the issues, propositions and conclusions that lend themselves to the only known scientific test: empirical verification. Thus, this book is not about what socialism or capitalism could have been, should have been, or should be. Nor is it an ode to capitalism. Its purpose is not to assert that capitalism is a better economic system than socialism. The history of this century and the market for institutions have done that. My purpose is to explain what is it that makes the institutions of capitalism better in terms of economic outcome than all other alternatives that have been tried since the beginning of recorded history.

Powerful Case for Why Property Rights and Incentives Matter

Pejovich's book deals primarily with the consequences of institutional arrangements, and the book's strength lies not in an exhaustive survey of recent work but in a vivid, compelling, accessible, and often outstanding analysis of the role of incentives and transaction costs in economic life. The book provides intelligent people everywhere with a clear and reader-friendly introduction to the nature of economic systems.

In an effort to establish the link between institutions and wealth, the author examines how alternative institutional arrangements affect the costs of transactions and incentive structures and how costs of transactions and incentives influence economic behavior and economic outcomes.

My first impression was that the book was of mixed quality, including both brilliant and rather sloppy sections, and the underlying research at times appeared to be thin. Occasionally, I did not appreciate the book's spirit of advocacy, even as a strategy for winning converts. The pros, however, overwhelm the cons.

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF INSTITUTIONS AND SYSTEMS is a powerful essay that examines the consequences of incentives and property rights for economic activity. Pejovich has made a valuable contribution to redefining the field of economic systems by an intelligent discussion of the damaging effects on human society of perverse property rights and disincentives. Although the volume sometimes pastes over problems and weaknesses in systems based on private ownership, its emphasis on the relative merits of a decentralized market system based on private property fully justifies its existence.
