Junco is my new favorite heroine. If only the rest of the book lived up to her spunk.

Junco is the female version of House. She says whatever is on her mind and purposely does things just for the sake of being an ass. She's the teenager who laughs the whole way through a haunted house, complains that it was cheesy, and then has nightmares about it. I love how complex a character she is. Plus, she's the shoot first then shoot again if still alive kind of gal. I fell in love with her on the first page and despite all shortcomings of this book, Junco has convinced me to read the series.
The universe in which Junco lives in is a dystopian science fiction. There's some geek terms and alien technology, but most of what Junco uses exists on the real world. I didn't have any trouble following along with the unique terms, although it did take me a few pages through Chapter One to figure out that "Goat" is not an animal but a vehicle. Baa!
I liked Tier throughout the story, even though Junco did not. He's a killer, but there's a soft side to him that I find very touching. There's not much room for personality between Tier and Junco and so many of the minor characters feel more like plot things than actual people. Moju especially has no personality. He plays a big role in the story (and probably the series), but there's no definition at all to his personality.
There's quite a bit of disinformation and half-truths being told to Junco by the other characters and it makes the story line confusing as hell through parts, but it does make sense by the end. Junco is so thickheaded and stubborn that she also hides information from the reader and other characters in the story. She also manages to pull off the seemingly impossible - pulling a Benedict Arnold every chapter. She trusts no one and so jumps ship at every opportunity.
I wish that there was a little more polish to the novel, as there's some things that seem to pop out of nowhere, and a little foreshadow would of been nice. For instance, Junco being afraid of water isn't mentioned until it plays a major part in the story. And the ending felt wordy. I did love the dialogue and Junco's narrative had just the right amount of attitude.
Overall, this is a fun science fiction novel with a protagonist you can't help but love. Looking forward to reading more books by J.A. Huss featuring Junco.

Surprisingly kickass. Great book to kick off the series

I reviewed Clutch, Fledge, and Flight for the I Am Just Junco blog tour by Bewitching Blog Tours so this review pretty much covers all three books.
This science fiction series by author J.A. Huss totally took me by surprise. "Just Junco" turns out to be a foul-mouthed super badass heroine and the series totally kicks ass.
In the first pages of book one we are introduced right away to Junco, our heroine who is by no means a girly-girl. She's the type who knows all her weapons and firearms, would probably go nuts over a motorcycle helmet sale, and could care less about fashion and anything frilly. All she knows are secret military ops and assassinations. She's been trained to be a ruthless killer since birth and she's pretty good at what she does, but we learn that there's so much more to her and everybody wants her for themselves. Everybody here means the aliens or Avians as they are called, and the humans, all the different factions and republics. They all have an agenda and Junco is right smack in the middle of it all.
Clutch, Fledge, and Flight are pretty much made of the same stuff--they are all exciting, action-packed, and emotional in different ways. In each succeeding book, the excitement and emotional factor rise and you can't help but be swept along with it. It's hard to talk about specific events without giving anything away.
What I really like about this series is the main character, Junco, who is truly a badass killing machine, but we also see a vulnerable side to her. We see how her life has been like since she was young and we see how things affect her. We see her being constantly barraged with things that could bring any person down, but we see her cry, get hurt, and bring herself back up. She is one character that you would truly feel and root for to the end.
Another thing I like about the series is that it's very fast-paced and the story is very original. I like the author's unique writing style. I like that there's always something happening and each twist to the story is revealed at the perfect moment. Sometimes you'd think there are too many twists, but they all add to the story and come together nicely. I also like the play with mythology and religion mixed in with the science.
This series is a fun sci fi piece with a dash of dystopian and a little bit of fantasy. It really is pretty exciting and I can't wait to read what happens next.

Too Many Secrets

What's it like to be stuck in 1st person narrative with slightly psychotic amnesiac with selective memory repression? I found it frustrating. The reader really never has any clue what's really going on... I think that was ok for maybe 50% of the book, but then it just became exhausting. Over and over we got this merri-go-round of actually thinking we're about to learn something, then its put off...or we learn something, but find out the next chapter that it wasn't true.
What really saved this book from a 2-star rating was the character of Junco and her dry, self-deprecating wit. The author does this very well and its really the only thing that kept me reading at times.
But what killed it for me was the final events, that just didn't make any sense.
Spoiler Alert:
1) Why is Aren even alive? We were told (and shown) that Tier killed him.
2) How did Aren "hack" a sentient AI in the house? How did he "hack" the SEAR bio-print?
3) Aren used a digitally fabricated recording of Junco to trigger the house AI lockdown...are AIs that dumb?
4) OK, assume AI is that dumb...why is Aren immune from being targeted? We're told that that the person who triggers Lockdown gets immunity...but Junco's "voice" triggered it, not Aren.
5) Why does the AI target Junco? the whole purpose of the house AI is to safeguard Junco, the AI recognizes Junco, the AI initiates Lockdown based on Junco's "order"...this is just poorly thought out deus ex machine. I would be far more likely to feel forgiving if it weren't for the fact that its the end of the book and I STILL have no idea what's really going on. How am I supposed to "trust" the author with being spoon-fed information, when there are absurd logic issues?
6) Should we assume that if, for example, Junco's father triggered lockdown, Junco would be slain for blinking? or coughing in her sleep?
7) No home defense system would be set up to "chop someone into thousands of pieces in under a second" with lasers.
8) Why is Junco all of a sudden able to get away by shouting LULLIBY? Maybe its better this wasn't explained, as it could in no way reconcile with the previous "facts"
9) Why does Aren feel comfortable torturing Junco in front of the press all of a sudden?
10 How does Junco suddenly enter the VR world and get help from her dead lover?
I won't be buying the next book. I would, however, consider reading this author down the road a bit...the problems I have with the book can be easily fixed with a bit more experience, and the witty self-dialog shows signs of a real talent for writing.
