In addition to describing the basic principles of garden design, they offer plans and suggestions for using natural and manufactured elements in specific situations, showing, for example, how to plant miniature woods. As the authors consider regional variations in climate, soils, etc., this useful book is recommended for gardening collections, which should also have Ken Druse's The Natural Garden (Crown, 1989).

A natural

Landscaping with nature is a nicely organized book that helps you create a plan for a natural landscape. It recommends plants and designs based on your area. The plans are not too elaborate and not too simple and the plant lists, both native and convergent species, are extensive.
All in all, Landscaping with Nature was exactly the book I was looking for to slightly civilize the natural landscape of my property.

Outlived its usefulness as a resource

When this book was published in 1991, I don't think anyone was as aware as they are today about the importance of using native plants to attract wildlife. This book was heading in the right direction for the time, but now that we are more aware of what nature needs this book has outlived its usefulness. If y're interested in gardening for nature, turn to Douglas Tallamy's, Bringing Nature Home. The plant lists are geared towards the mid-Atlantic, but the concepts apply no matter where you live.
